As a space for healing, reflection, and awakening, the underlying inspiration for Hygeia 540 is the pentagon, a symbol revered in many cultures, religions, and geometry as a representation of health and prosperity. Not only can the shape of the pentagon be found in the floor plan of the building, but it is also reflected in the ceiling, skylight, structural beams, and is even the geometry of the building blocks. This repetition creates a feeling of balance and centeredness within the space while simultaneously emphasizing connections to nature and growth. To further strengthen the connection between this healing space and the surrounding natural environment, the building is constructed of
natural materials, is entirely self-sufficient, and incorporates all five of the fundamental physical elements: fire, earth, metal, water and wood.
